ART CENTER TAMARINDO IS A PROPOSED CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL CAMPUS WITHIN THE GAIA MASTER PLAN IN TAMARINDO, COSTA RICA. THE PROJECT BRINGS TOGETHER SPACES FOR ARTISTIC LEARNING, PERFORMANCE AND ACCOMMODATION WITHIN A WOODED LANDSCAPE. EXISTING TREES, NATURAL CLEARINGS AND THE CONTOURS OF THE TERRAIN GUIDE THE ARRANGEMENT OF BUILDINGS AND OUTDOOR SPACES, ESTABLISHING A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES AND THE SURROUNDING FOREST.

CONCEPT

The architectural approach begins with the landscape. Buildings, walkways and roofs are arranged around existing trees, while shared gardens connect interior spaces and provide places for informal exchange. The proposal follows the natural slopes to limit earthworks and preserve continuity with the terrain.

Green roofs, shaded circulation and natural ventilation form part of the environmental strategy. Raised structures are proposed to reduce contact with the ground, while wood, stone and earth-toned concrete establish a material palette drawn from the site. Native planting and an arboretum extend the educational experience into the landscape.

PROGRAM

The campus combines individual teaching studios, art and music classrooms, multipurpose learning spaces, and accommodation for students and teachers. Educational and residential clusters are organized around gardens and linked by covered walkways.

A principal amphitheater accommodates performances and public events, supported by backstage facilities, administration and a food-truck area. A separate natural amphitheater provides an informal setting for practice, talks and recreation. Access points, parking and service routes organize public arrivals while maintaining separation from the quieter teaching and residential areas.
