Gwangju Public Library

What should a library be like today? How should we understand the relationship between knowledge and human relations with nature? Under these premises, the architectural concept of our proposal was developed. We understand knowledge as the primary basis for the progress of a country, we believe linking knowledge directly to nature is the  key for future societies to evolve in harmony with  the planet; creating an elevated quality of perception and use of built space thus materializing the analogy of books being the root of knowledge and knowledge being the biophilic integration of nature and built space. As an interpretation of this analogy the project proposes the creation of modular cubic volumes, that respond to the Korean kan measuring system of proportion, within a grand transparent fluid space. The programatic cubes contain the books and knowledge sharing activities inside and project their knowledge as the energy or roots that result in the birth of trees and vegetation at the top of each cube, proposing a future of unity between humans and Earth.
