MERU IS A RESIDENTIAL PROJECT IN ORLANDO CONCEIVED AS AN ARCHITECTURAL JOURNEY FROM THE EVERYDAY WORLD TOWARD A SPIRITUAL CENTER. INSPIRED BY MOUNT MERU AS AN AXIS MUNDI, THE HOUSE IS ORGANIZED THROUGH A MAIN AXIS AND A SEQUENCE OF SPATIAL LAYERS THAT MOVE FROM ENTRANCE AND COURTYARDS TO THE PRINCIPAL LIVING SPACES, SANCTUARY, AND LAKE. ARCHITECTURE BECOMES A GRADUAL PASSAGE BETWEEN EXTERIOR LIFE, DOMESTIC INTIMACY, CONTEMPLATION, AND LANDSCAPE.
CONCEPT
The proposal translates Mount Meru — understood as the central axis of the universe — into a spatial structure of ascent, balance, and unity. A clear axis orders the project, while nested layers establish thresholds between the physical and spiritual realms. Movement through the house becomes a process of transition: the perimeter and entrance define the outer world; courtyards mediate and purify; the main hall marks an intermediate condition; and the sanctuary forms the symbolic center.
MERU proposes the home as more than a collection of rooms: it becomes a choreographed progression through distinct states of privacy, gathering, reflection, and connection with the landscape. Its stepped, inward composition gives architectural form to the idea of reaching one’s own center.
PROGRAM
The house is arranged between the access road and the lake. A perimeter wall and main entrance lead toward service spaces, social areas, a pool and terrace, and the central hall. Private rooms occupy a more protected layer, while the spiritual center, sanctuary, and meditation spaces form the project’s innermost zone. Courtyards organize circulation and environmental transitions, and the sequence culminates in a direct visual and spatial relationship with the lake.
