SPORTIVA IS A VERTICAL RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT IN HEREDIA, COSTA RICA, DEFINED BY THE CONTRAST BETWEEN EXPOSED CONCRETE AND LARGE GLAZED OPENINGS. RECESSED BALCONIES, PROJECTING WINDOW FRAMES AND THE REPETITION OF STRUCTURAL BAYS GIVE DEPTH AND RHYTHM TO THE FACADES. THE SOLID END WALLS CONTRAST WITH THE MORE OPEN LONGITUDINAL ELEVATIONS, WHILE GREEN ACCENTS MARK THE UPPER LEVELS. FROM WITHIN THE APARTMENTS, BROAD WINDOWS FRAME THE SURROUNDING URBAN LANDSCAPE AND MOUNTAINS, CONNECTING DOMESTIC SPACES WITH THE WIDER CONTEXT.

CONCEPT

The facades establish a dialogue between solid surfaces and framed openings. Exposed concrete provides a continuous material language, articulated by recessed panels, projecting window surrounds and deep balcony openings. Black frames sharpen the contrast between concrete and glazing, while green accents introduce colour at the upper levels. The changing depth of these elements produces a pattern of light and shadow across the building.

PROGRAM

The project accommodates housing in a multi-storey condominium. Large windows and recessed balconies connect the apartments to views of the surrounding landscape. At street level, a concrete entrance volume distinguishes pedestrian arrival from the adjacent vehicular access and parking. The contrast between these shared access spaces and the repeated residential bays makes the building's different scales of use visible.
