ULATINA TRANSFORMS THE SAN PEDRO CAMPUS INTO A BIOPHILIC LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, WHERE TIMBER, LIGHT AND VEGETATION SHAPE HEALTHIER SPACES TO STUDY, MEET AND GROW.
CONCEPT
The new Universidad Latina campus in San Pedro, Montes de Oca, starts from a simple question: how do you design a healthy space to learn? The answer is biophilic design, which reconnects people with nature to reduce stress and fatigue, improve rest and increase productivity. A better immediate environment strengthens the capacity to learn.
The project transforms the existing campus by selectively demolishing volumes and connecting its existing voids into a new system of open spaces. A monumental stair links these voids through every level, turning circulation into a place to meet, pause and look out over the planted terraces.
MATERIALS
Timber construction reduces construction waste, fixes CO2 and is light, flexible and insulating. It allows easy prefabrication, is recyclable and, as a natural material, reinforces the biophilic experience.
A ventilated façade wraps the building, bringing in natural airflow and daylight, creating healthier interiors, reducing the need for mechanical systems and offering solar control through a modular system with a distinctive architectural language.
PROGRAM
Classrooms, laboratories and postgraduate classrooms are organized around the central stair, together with a library and a configurable black-box auditorium, all opening onto planted terraces and a public plaza at street level.
