A HOUSE SHAPED BY THE LANDSCAPE. IN GUANACASTE, ZAPOTAL H15 SETTLES INTO THE SLOPE, ORGANIZING ITS VOLUMES AROUND EXISTING TREES AND OPENING THE DAILY SPACES TOWARD THE PACIFIC OCEAN. A CONTINUOUS ROOF GATHERS THE HOUSE INTO A SINGLE, LOW-SLUNG FORM.
CONCEPT
Zapotal H15 begins with the site’s highest point: a group of existing trees that becomes the center of the house. The program follows their geometry, forming a protected garden while the principal rooms turn toward panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
The project responds to a steep Guanacaste hillside by occupying the gentler ground near the upper part of the lot. Rather than remove its most significant vegetation, the house curves around a group of mature trees and makes them the focus of arrival, circulation, and daily life. A sequence of open and enclosed spaces transforms the walk through the house into a continuous encounter with shade, landscape, and changing seasonal conditions.
From this central garden, two wings extend toward the ocean and organize the private rooms on either side of the site. The social areas occupy the lower edge of the main floor, opening completely to a broad terrace, pool, and jacuzzi oriented to the west and southwest. Deep roof overhangs, timber screens, and planted thresholds temper sun and rain, creating an architecture that remains open to the climate while protected from it.
PROGRAM
The main level brings together the living room, kitchen, dining areas, office, primary suite, and four secondary bedrooms around the central garden. Below, the slope accommodates the garage, laundry, service rooms, entertainment room, and a flexible guest space. This two-level arrangement preserves the horizontal character of the residence while limiting its impact on the terrain.
